This 11-18mm lens from Tamron is pretty lightweight, with a predominantly plastic finish. The design is functional – the zoom ring at the rear has a chunky design, while the manual focus ring at the front is relatively large.
Once the lens is placed on the front of a D-SLR with a 1.5x focal length multiplication, you have a lens with a 35mm equivalent of 16.5-27mm (17.6-28.8mm with a Canon D-SLR), so it hasn’t got the greatest range here on test, but it’s more than wide enough for most situations you’ll find yourself in.
As there’s no form of AF motor, we found focusing was noisy, with plenty of whirrs and buzzes. And as there’s no motor, if you’re a Nikon D40/D40x/D60 owner, it’ll be manual focus only. Focusing speed was average too – hunting occasionally and struggling to lock on in the shadows especially.
The Tamron SP AF11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 Di-II LD [IF] comes in at £395.
