The Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Macro Di is the latest incarnation of the 90mm Macro from Tamron and sports a long focal length.

With a film-equivalent focal length of 135mm on a D-SLR with a 1.5x crop factor, the Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Macro Di gives a greater working distance between you and your subject, but in use, it’s still fine for general macro work.
The lens itself is quite long, with a simple, basic design that looks a tad dated. Though it’s been finished well, it’s actually quite plasticky. There’s a large manual focus ring with a push/pull facility to quickly switch to manual focus, along with a Full/Limit switch on the side.
There are no motors to cut down on AF noise, so you’ll find in use it’s quite noisy – very mechanical sounding. During AF, it can hunt a little and is not the fastest at focusing, but on the whole it put in a solid performance. The manual focus ring does a good job – it’s well-balanced, with a smooth operation with an ample level of control. When focused down at 1:1, the lens barrel extends by 60mm.

Had this lens for close to a month now and it has proven to be a fantastic investment ! The 90mm focal length has been immensely useful as a portrait length as well as macro. I expect a constantly high level of image quality , which is the main thing I'm looking for in my equipment and the Tamron delivers . I think that the auto focus speed might be a turn off for some considering this lens but I would say the sharpness more than makes up for the rather loud AF system. All in all it is a massively versatile lens that is yet to disappoint for both Macro and Portrait. Highly recommended ! cheers Tom

I have the tamron 90mm macro lens I am very new to shooting macro photography but when I brought my tamron 90mm macro lens and I took the lens out of the box I was very please the camera is build very nice but it is very true it is very noisy and don't focus on small subjects very fast but if you don't care about speed the tamron 90mm lens is a great buy if you are new to macro photography and want to get into the door the tamron 90mm macro lens would go very far and you won't be mad that you spent your money on this news it is great for the money if you wan't to jump into photography
