Features & handling
This lens has a very compact design, and has a good feel to its barrel. Focus and zoom controls are well designed and easy to operate. The lens is constructed from 15 elements in 13 groups and there are seven aperture blades. For the money, you get a well-made lens that has a solid construction. At 510g it’s a very lightweight optic.

Performance
As a step up from your kit lens, the Tamron 28-75mm offers some good definition for £360. The sharpness on a full-frame camera is not bad across the aperture range. At 28mm it’s not as good, with edge definition soft at the widest aperture of f/2.8. Beyond f/8 it gets a lot better, with the sharpest aperture being f/11 when at short focal lengths.
This 28-75mm lens from Tamron suffers with aberration from around 50mm through to 28mm focal lengths. It gets worse as you shorten the zoom down to 28mm and can be seen very easily. It’s not a major problem though, and like other lenses that show signs of this problem, it’s likely that it will outperform the kit lens that came supplied with your camera.
This is another lens that distorts, as expected, at the wide-angle end of the zoom. There is, however, slightly more distortion in the corners of this lens at 28mm than we have seen on other optics. This lens can be used (and was tested) on full-frame models, which shows up this type of error more obviously than would be seen on a lens solely designed for APS-C.

Verdict
This lens is available in a good mix of camera mounts, which means a wide range of users can utilise this good value optic. The £360 price point doesn’t correlate to a shoddy lens, as it’s well made and feels good to use. This lens is nice and sharp but suffers in terms of aberration. That said, it can deliver high quality images with correct contrast and tones for a price that is within reach for a wide number of photographers.
