The latest long zoom from Tamron gives an excellent focal length range from 200-500mm. This is a Di lens that is designed to work with the APS-C sensor DSLRs. It’s a very long lens in terms of its focal length and, indeed, physical size. Attach the lens hood, and at full zoom you have a lens measuring half a meter in length, but near on 15cm of that is the lens hood itself. The 200-500mm gives the 35mm equivalent range of 300-800mm on a Canon body, so the lack of a stabiliser will cause some users problems at high zoom settings.
A really neat feature is a detachable filter effect controller that allows you to control a circular polariser even with the lens hood attached. Focusing is quite slow and it takes more than one twist of the wrist to move through the zoom range. Image quality is not bad, but the lens is expensive at £860. This isn’t as much as some branded equivalents admittedly, but you have to be serious to spend that sort of cash.
