The Tamron 18-270mm Di II VC has a superb focal length range, and also benefits from built-in Vibration Control (VC). Available in both Canon and Nikon fits, the lens is priced at £450, which we feel is a tad high for a lens like this. The build quality is good, but not pro standard, and it’s frustrating to have the focus ring powering back and forth when AF is used; you can find you’re handholding the ring and having to move it to attain focus. The zoom barrel extends a long way to achieve the 270mm range, but it compacts neatly back down for stowage and using the 18mm end of the zoom. It’s a lightweight lens, which makes it an ideal travel companion, and is quite pleasant to use if you can overlook the minor focusing ring issue. In use, the lens shows quite obvious barrelling at the wide-angle end, which is to be expected at 18mm. Vignetting creeps into the corners at 18mm, so your images have dark shadows there, especially when using the lens’s largest aperture of f/3.5 at 18mm. This gets better as you zoom in, but then focusing gets softer towards the edges of the frame. From 50-200mm the performance is a lot better across the aperture range.
