The Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II LD AF SP offers a broad, film-equivalent focal length coverage of 15-36mm on a 1.5x D-SLR, or 16-38mm on a Canon EF-S body. The variable maximum aperture of f/3.5-4.5 on the Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II LD AF SP is relatively fast, while Canon and Nikon variants benefit from the addition of a built-in motor to boot, allowing for AF noise to be reduced. This also means that full AF functionality is possible with Nikon D40/60/3000/5000 models, thanks to the built-in motor. There’s a generous zoom ring with a grooved rubberised finish, and a good-sized manual focus ring at the front. The slightly wider spacing between the grooves means it’s easy to differentiate between the two rings. The build is to a good standard and while the finish is mainly plastic, it has a solid feel.
While the AF performs well and locks on without any major hunting issues, it’s noticeably slow compared to alternative comparable lenses. Considering there’s a motor built-in, AF noise is still evident, too. There’s an M/A switch on the lens barrel, and in manual focus there’s not quite the precise feel we’d like, but it’s still smooth and allows for a decent level of control.
