The Tamron 55-200mm F/4-5.6 Di II LD is a capable zoom lens for those on a budget. At £105 this lens is a real bargain offering and gives Canon, Nikon and Sony D-SLR owners the possibility of a lot of zoom for relatively little cash. On the features front there’s no image stabilisation – a drawback for Nikon and Canon users who won’t have any in-camera, but on the plus side, the Tamron offers a close-up facility with a reproduction ratio of 1:3.5 at 200mm, a short minimum focusing distance of 0.95m, and an MF/AF switch, too. The build leaves a little to be desired with a plastic lens mount, a thin manual focus ring and, although the rubberised zoom ring is large, its action is stiff at both the wide and long end of the zoom range. Performance isn’t the best either, with noisy and slow AF. Put those negatives aside however, and if you’re looking for a capable zoom on a budget the Tamron delivers – just check out the image quality results where it holds its own.
