Sony DT 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 ZA ultra zoom lensThe Sony DT 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 ZA ultra zoom lens has a really versatile focal range and produces some good images at f/11 and below.
Performance & handlingWeighing in at 445g, the DT 16-80mm is quite small and light, but it’s quite expensive, too, at nearly £500. There’s a durable metal lens mount, nicely sized rubberised rings for the zoom and focus and, although the outer shell is plastic, the overall build
quality is good.
The Sony DT 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 ZA offers a versatile focal range, but to justify the price you’d want to see some outstanding image quality results, particularly as the cheaper Sigma 17-70mm comes in a Sony mount and has a faster maximum aperture.
The 16-80mm focal range will be a draw for those looking for a good all-rounder – it has a ‘super wide’ view, equivalent to 24mm on 35mm cameras, which is great for squeezing a little extra into the frame. The extra zoom length makes it a good companion in a range of photo situations. This lens is compatible with all Sony _ models and you’ll benefit from in-camera image stabilisation, too.
The autofocus is fast, locking onto subjects quickly, but the lens whirrs a lot during the process, and while manual focusing is silent, it’s not very smooth.
Value & verdictThe Sony DT 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 ZA has a really versatile focal range and produces good images at f/11 and below. It’s let down by a softness at the smaller apertures, though, which is disappointing for a lens at this price. For Sony D-SLR owners who want to fit more into the frame then this is a good choice, but as image quality is not outstanding, it’s difficult to justify the extra spend on the DT 16-80mm if you can cope with a more limited focal range.
