The Sony 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DT offers an equivalent focal length of 112.5-450mm when mounted on a Sony D-SLR with an APS-C sized sensor such as the A380, A450 and A550. Featuring a variable aperture of f/4.5 at the wide end, closing down to f/5.6 at full telephoto, the Sony 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DT is a light lens and feels a bit ‘hollow’ in the hand when compared to its rivals. It does have a finely rubberised zoom ring, though, and the mechanism offers enough resistance to prevent the zoom from creeping out when carried vertically. It’s just as well, too, as there’s no zoom lock featured.
The focus ring at the front is a reasonable size but using it in Manual Focus mode we noticed it was slightly noisy. With Sony D-SLRs featuring the Super SteadyShot anti-shake system built into the body, there’s no need for an optical image stabiliser in the lens. Construction is made up of 13 glass elements in 10 groups, with 7 aperture blades.
The motor that operates the lens’s AF system isn’t of the silent type, so you can expect a mechanical whir in operation. The lens hunted for focus a few times before locking onto our subject in poor lighting conditions. At the front it uses a 55mm thread and features a minimum focusing distance of 150cm. A decent, circular lens hood to combat flare is included for good measure.
