The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8G is finished in a heat reflective white guise that signifies it’s one of Sony’s top-of-the-range lenses in the G-series lineup.
The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8G is a big and beefy telephoto zoom that weighs 1340g and its heaviness contributes to a muscular and refined feel in the hand. Construction-wise, it features 19 glass elements in 16 groups and though there’s no form of optical stabilisation, this is due to Sony D-SLRs featuring the body-based Steady Shot Inside system to reduce shake.
The lens features Sony’s Super Sonic Wave Motor (SSM) to keep AF performance quiet and fast and in-between the finely grooved zoom and focus rings there are three focus-hold buttons. These are used to lock the focus on your desired subject and prevent the lens unexpectedly searching for focus in other areas of the frame. Mounted to Sony’s A900, the lens felt well balanced and rock solid. Both the focus and zoom rings are consistently smooth, with the latter being only fractionally stiffer than the focus ring. AF was both responsive and ultra-quiet, matching the high performance offered by the Canon, Nikon and Sigma zooms and we’re pleased to say no signs of hunting at either end of the focal length were witnessed. For your money, a tripod collar and a lens hood are included.
