Coupled to a Sony full-frame D-SLR such as the a850 or a900, the Sony 50mm f/2.8 D Macro is a true 50mm lens in 35mm terms and turns into a 75mm lens when used with a Sony APS-C sensor D-SLR with 1.5x crop factor.

The maximum f/2.8 aperture of the Sony 50mm f/2.8 D Macrois consistent with many others in its range and the internal construction features 7 glass elements arranged in 6 groups. The build quality of the lens doesn’t match the high standard set by the likes of its Canon and Nikon variants and regrettably feels a tad plasticky and light in comparison.
Along with focus distance markings on the barrel, the reproduction ratio is revealed as the lens protrudes and the focus limit switch can restrict the ratio to 1:4, or within 20cm of your subject. The focusing ring is a good size, offers a pleasing, well-weighted feel with plenty of grip, but our test lens had a fair bit of slack in the mechanism which made for slightly trickier focusing. Without a Super Sonic Wave (SSW) motor to cut out AF noise, you can expect to hear a few whirs and groans when the lens is focusing, too.
