Released in the early part of 2010, Sigma’s 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM might seem significantly more expensive than its rivals, but it’s one of the most competitively priced 85mm f/1.4 lenses on the market to feature full AF/MF workings and a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) to keep AF operation as quiet and quick as possible. The construction of the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM is made up of 11 glass elements in eight groups and includes one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and one aspherical lens.
The lens uses a 9-blade aperture arrangement and, being a third party option, it’s available in various mounts including Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony and Sigma. Compatible with APS-C and full-frame D-SLRs, this is a large, heavy lens at 725g. On larger enthusiast D-SLRs, such as Canon’s EOS 7D, our Canon-fit lens felt right at home, however on smaller entry-level D-SLRs it made the camera feel front-heavy. The focus ring is big, offers a pleasing resistance and is easy to locate from behind the camera, just like the prominent MF/AF switch.
Focusing was smooth and silent with no hunting. For APS-C users it comes with an adapter to extend the length of the lens hood for effective shading, and it accepts filters or adapters with 77mm filter threads.
