The Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro offers a film equivalent of 105mm on a D-SLR with a 1.5x crop factor.
The design of the Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro is quite simple, with an uncluttered feel, and the focus distance indicator positioned on the barrel of the lens. Considering the size of the lens, the manual focus ring is actually quite small, but you’ll find a handy Full/Limit focus selector on the side of the barrel.
The lens is finished in a matt black, keeping in line with all other EX lenses in the Sigma range, and it’s a pretty beefy lens all round, tipping the scales at a weighty 527g, while it has a durable, well-made feel.
Focus is pretty quiet, even though there isn’t one of Sigma’s HSM motors to reduce AF noise (it will be manual focus-only on a Nikon D40/40x/60, however), but it’s not that quick.
The manual focus ring is weighted quite well, but when it’s focused fully at 1:1, the lens extends a fair amount, though it does display reproduction ratios on the extended part of the barrel.
