Sigma features two 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms in its lens lineup; partnering this pro-spec model is Sigma’s 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II lens which is 85g lighter and offers a 100cm minimum focusing distance but unfortunately doesn’t offer a built-in anti-shake system, unlike the pro-spec model we tested.

The Optical Stabilizer (OS) on the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM permits the use of shutter speeds four stops slower than would otherwise be possible, much like the Canon and Nikon anti-shake systems, and the switch that’s used to turn OS on and off is also used to set modes 1 or 2. Mode 1 is for general shooting, whereas Mode 2 is for use with panning subjects. To help ensure quiet and fast AF, Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) is on board and of the 22 glass elements, two are the Low Dispersion type (FLD) and three are of the special low dispersion (SLD) type, which help correct for colour aberrations.
Despite the barrel feeling more plasticky than its more expensive rivals, it feels solid once mounted to the camera. The AF/MF and OS switches are raised, making them easy to locate from behind the camera, and both offer reassuring clicks. AF performance was fractionally slower than Nikon’s zoom, but it operated very quietly in our tests with no signs of hunting. Available in Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma and Sony mounts it supports 77mm filters and comes supplied with large lens hood and tripod collar.
