Big zooms tend to be the favoured tool of the sports or action photographer, and if you are looking for such an optic, then for £730 you should consider this Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 – it’s a beast of a lens.

Covering 150-500mm is a great zoom range, especially when you factor in a digital crop like 1.6x found on our test camera, the Canon EOS 50D, as this takes the focal length range up to 240-800mm! Thankfully Sigma has added an optical stabiliser (OS) to the lens, which worked really well on our test shots. We achieved near sharpness at just 1/30sec at 800mm – impressive stuff. The lens is very well made, and comes with a tripod mount and a sturdy case. Handling is very good, with a small rotation of the zoom barrel required to cover the range. The manual focusing ring is nice and chunky, as are the focus and OS selection switches.
The 150-500mm ticks all the right boxes for the photographer who wants lots of magnification in a quality lens with optical stabilisation. At the long end, the definition does start to fall off, but this tends to happen when light is low and you are at maximum apertures. Generally, performance is solid and images show good detail.

This is definitely a poor man's wildlife lens. It gets you to 500mm and when you factor in the crop factor on cameras like the Nikon D90, D7000 or Canon 7D, 60D then it really gives you good reach, but unsurprisingly quality at that focal length really is totally compromised. It's soft pretty much at anything over 200mm and its slow maximum aperture makes this a nightmare to use during the long winter months where you'll be left wishing you saved your pennies for an f/4 or f/2.8 prime. The truth is that if you want great images you need to either spend a fortune on quality glass or get a lot closer to your subject in the first place. Invest in a portable personal bird hide before you invest in this lens if you ask me...

I purchased this lens last month and took the photographers of the Heron using monopod on my second afternoon out during the first week on ownership. All my other lenses are Nikons, so was concerned about build quality. No problems so far and the build does look very good. I sourced many reviews before making my final decision to purchase this lens and I'm still happy I made the right choice. Not sure for the money how this lens can be beaten, as it is sharp. The OS is a little noisy, but works well and lens supplied with a very good case. I will update profile with future photographs.

I bought this for less than it says here, so LOOK and youll get a deal. If you look at my profile youll see a shot of some wingwalkers.. now that was taken at an airshow and trust me they were a GOOD distance away and it looks as if they are right beside me. Thats was one of the first shots I took and I have to say after reading and study on this size and make some of the reviews were pretty harsh... well BULL. Its well made and the only thing is that it doesnt have a barrel lock, well so what. I think your find for speed and clarity it wont be beaten on price for one. It doesnt like low light but theres ways to get round that,so, if this is the size your looking for then go for it. You wont be dissapointed.

This is a stunning lens. I was looking at the L series canon lenses, but can't run to the cost. the Sigma is amazing value for it's performance, the OS system amazes me, using the lens handheld at full length in low light still brought good result. Highly recommended!
