The Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM has an added 2-stop advantage at the long end.The most notable difference between the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM and the other Sigma 10-20mm lens is that this has a relatively fast constant maximum aperture of f/3.5. How much of a benefit this will be to you depends on your shooting requirements. There’s the added 2-stop advantage at the long end of the zoom range that can be handy when shooting hand-held in low light, though this gain is reduced to 1/2 a stop at 10mm, while there’s also a 7-blade diaphragm. Compared to 6 blades on the other Sigma 10-20mm, this should produce a more natural Bokeh effect (the look of the out-of-focus areas in the image).
The other subtle difference is the inclusion of an M/A switch on the barrel of the lens that extends the lens slightly, but otherwise, these two lenses are very similar, with the same matt black finish and overall classy feel. HSM is standard on all mounts, too.
There are no nasty surprises when it comes to the overall performance of the lens; AF is strong, locking on with ease and focusing quietly and, as before, the manual focus ring is a decent size, allowing a great level of control and precision in operation.
