The 12-24mm from Pentax has a constant maximum aperture of f/4 through the entire zoom range, internal focusing (IF) and gives a 35mm equivalent range of 18-36mm.
If the 10-17mm Pentax model is a bit too extreme for you, then Pentax also produces the 12-24mm. It has a constant maximum aperture of f/4 through the entire zoom range, internal focusing (IF) and gives a 35mm equivalent range of 18-36mm. The lens has a conservative design, with a large rubberised zoom ring at the rear and small manual focus ring at the front. There are no complaints about the build quality, but considering how much you’re paying for the lens, it doesn’t actually feel any different from cheaper Pentax lenses in the range.Like the Pentax 10-17mm, there’s no SDM motor for reduced AF noise, so you’ll find that during AF there’ll be some reverberation as the operation transfers through the camera body. Lock-on was pretty good, though it did have a tendency to hunt a bit in low contrast conditions. The Pentax smc DA 12-24mm f/4 ED AL (IF) costs in the region of £518.
