On Pentax D-SLRs, this DA 10-17mm lens has a comparable 35mm focal length of 15-25mm. But, unlike the other ultra-wide zooms on test, this is a true fisheye lens with uncorrected optics that can deliver a 180º field-of-view at 10mm. This also means that the image is heavily distorted, bending both horizontal and vertical lines, but the circular image that the lens captures fully covers the sensor.
Filters aren’t an option as the front element is not only markedly convex, but also includes a built-in lens hood. The design is compact, while the build quality is to a good standard.
In use, the lens can be relatively noisy to use – it doesn’t include the Pentax SDM motor, so you’ll experience a few whirrs and buzzes as the AF does its job. Having said that, focus speed was pretty fast and the manual focus ring is reasonably balanced, though has just a tad too much play.
The Pentax smc DA 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 ED (IF) will set you back around £345.
