The Olympus ED 40-150mm F/4-5.6 has been designed specifically for use with the E-400 series of D-SLRs and is also compatible with Olympus’s full range of D-SLRs – and the Micro FourThirds E-P1 via an adapter. Despite its diminutive size, the Olympus ED 40-150mm F/4-5.6 boasts nicely sized zoom and focus rings, which both feature a rubberised finish for ease of use and offer a nice smooth action. Olympus has included an ED glass element for improved image quality which is a bonus, although at the rear there is a plastic lens mount. Performance is solid with quick autofocus that locks on well and has a handy minimum focus distance of just 0.9m, but with no MF/AF switch you have to set up the camera to be able to focus manually. There’s no image stabilisation either, as Olympus has chosen to build this into the camera, so if this is important to you make sure it’s a feature of your D-SLR.
