The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR weighs in at a pretty hefty 1470g and has a really solid feel – the build is excellent and is matched by a top-notch finish. This is complemented by a good specification and, thanks to the Silent Wave Motor, it’s almost near-silent in AF operation.
It also features Nikon’s own image stabilisation technology known as Vibration Reduction (VR), offering a 3-stop advantage.
There are also two modes – Normal and Active. Normal means that if you’re panning, the VR will not try to correct it, but in Active mode, it’ll correct all movement.
Though reasonably heavy, this is soon forgotten once fitted to a D-SLR, as it offers a nice balance. The zoom ring comes perfectly to hand, while the manual focus ring at the front is finely weighted, too.
Autofocus is fast, precise and super-quiet. During AF, you can quickly switch to manual focus without needing to move your hand and right at the front, two buttons can be found that allow you to lock focus if you wish. A first-class lens, though this is reflected in its price.
The balance once on a D-SLR is great, while the handling makes this lens a joy to use. Results are excellent, with pin-sharp results across the zoom and aperture range. It may be quite pricey, but this is a lens that is worth the asking price for the increased quality you get.
