Nikon’s 60mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Micro is the latest Micro lens in the Nikon lens line-up, replacing the ageing non-AF-S version.

The Nikon 60mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Micro is unique in that Nikon refers to its macro lenses as Micro – a name that’s stuck since the 1950s, due to Nikon engineers being quite strict regarding the definition between the two names.
Again, the design is quite sleek and modern – there’s a large manual focus ring with a finely grooved, rubberised grip – and there’s a reproduction ratio guide running from 1:10 to 1:1 in the focus distance indicator. On a DX-format Nikon D-SLR, the 1.5x crop factor means that this lens will have a 35mm focal length equivalent of 90mm, but full-frame FX-format Nikon D-SLRs owners can also use this lens without the increase in focal length. Build is top-notch too, with a proper solid, weighty feel.
Focusing is ultra-quiet, thanks to use of an AF-S (Silent Wave) motor – it’s also good news for D40/40x/60 owners as this will allow for full AF operation.
The manual focus ring is perfectly balanced and weighted for precise control when focusing manually.

At 90mm equivalent, it also doubles as a half-decent portrait lens on DX bodies. The images it produces are as sharp as you could ever want, and it is just perfect for subjects that don't move much such as flowers or bees that are occupied with them. At full 1:1 the working distance is miniscule - depending on what you're photographing you might find you don't have the room to use the SB-R1C1 kit and have to put the SB-R200s on their stands. It might occasionally be handy to have VR, but you can't have everything: other than that, no disadvantages, five stars.
