The Nikon 12-24mm F/4 G AF-S IF-ED DX offers a fixed maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the entire zoom range and features Nikon’s SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for fast and silent autofocusing. As with Canon EF-S models, Nikon’s DX series of lenses are only compatible with Nikon D-SLRs that use the smaller APS-C sensor. Attached to a Nikon D-SLR, the 1.5x focal length multiplication means this lens offers an 18-36mm equivalent range, which is good, but isn’t quite as much coverage as some other options. The 12-24mm does offer a fixed maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the entire zoom range, though, and also features Nikon’s SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for fast and silent autofocusing and full AF compatibility with the D40/D40x/D60. At nearly £800 it’s quite expensive and, as you’d expect at such a high price, the build quality is exceptional. It has a top finish, smooth zoom and focus rings and a front element that doesn’t rotate during focusing thanks to the internal focus (IF), which is handy when using filters. A great lens for Nikon users, if you can afford it.
