The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM from Canon sports a clean, modern design, and is also reasonably compact, too!

The manual focus ring on the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM isn’t massive, but it’s a pretty good size, with a finely grooved, rubberised grip. There’s a dedicated AF/MF switch to swap between the two modes and the focus distance indicator also has a clearly labelled reproduction ratio guide running from 1:5 to 1:1. As it’s EF-S, it’s not suitable for the EOS-1D or 5D series of Canon D-SLRs, and is only compatible with 1.6x models, producing a 35mm focal length equivalent of 96mm. It’s hard to pick fault with the build-quality – there’s a nice solid feel and the finish is excellent.
AF performance is very strong and there’s an Ultrasonic Motor (USM) used to help cut down on the amount of noise. It does the job – during AF operation, you can hardly hear it, while the manual focus ring is weighted very well for accurate focusing. Even right down to its focus limit (and unlike some other macro lenses that extend their front element) this one maintains its compact shape.

RE: Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM

I use this lens on my 50D for portraits with cracking results. When I use it for macro work, the results are equally impressive. Only you do have to get very close to get 1:1 reproduction, but it's worth the effort. With a maximum aperture of F2.8, it's fast enough for most conditions and a pleasure to use. I purchased mine in May 2009 for £399, now you can pick one up for £299! WHAT A BARGAIN. It's a MUST HAVE. For that money, you get a brilliant lens that would suit any EOS cropped sensor camera, it does my 50D justice
