Canon’s 10-22mm is an EF-S dedicated lens and will only fit Canon’s D-SLRs with APS-C sized sensors, such as the EOS 500D.As the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a dedicated lens, with the 1.6x crop factor of these D-SLRs the lens offers a film-equivalent focal length of 16-35mm. There’s a variable max aperture, ranging from f/3.5 at the wide end to f/4.5 at the telephoto, while the lens also incorporates Canon’s Ultrasonic motor (USM) to reduce AF noise.
Though the finish is relatively plasticky, it’s far removed from a kit lens in terms of feel and quality, but it can’t match that of one of Canon’s top-level L Series lenses. It balances really nicely on a 450/500D body and there’s a good rubberised grip round the zoom ring. Thanks to the USM motor, AF is very quiet in operation, while its performance is strong too - it locked on with ease and rarely hunted. The zoom ring is smooth through the entire range, but there’s just a bit too much friction from the manual focus ring at the rear of the lens to make it something you’d want to do regularly, though with a great AF performance this won’t be much of an issue.
