The EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM from Canon has a 35mm equivalent focal range of 16-35mm, offering a very wide, corrected field-of-view. The lens is relatively compact in design, with a zoom ring at the front and a small manual focus ring at the rear.
The lens uses Canon’s USM (Ultrasonic Motor) too, so expect near-silent autofocus, but a lens hood isn’t supplied – it’ll set you back another £25. The lens has been designed for D-SLRs with the EF-S mount such as the 400D or 40D, so it won’t work on the pro-spec, full-frame EOS-1D series or 5D.
The build quality is also top-notch, not quite up there with Canon’s L series lenses, but still good – especially for the price. The zoom ring has a nice fluid action and AF is fast, locking onto subjects without any problems and, thanks to the USM motor, focus is whisper quiet, too.
Expect to pay in the region of £575 for the Canon EF-S 10-22mm 3.5-4.5 USM.
