The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens is a quality piece of kit, offering excellent results and solid build-quality.
While some macro lens barrels extend alarmingly to focus in really close, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM uses an internal focusing mechanism so the lens remains the same length at all times.
Focusing is virtually silent, thanks to the ultrasonic motor (USM), and very accurate with minimal hunting. Usefully, there is a focus limiter, which should save you some time and allows you to choose between the full focusing range (0.31m to infinity) or a reduced range (0.48m to infinity).
The minimum aperture of f/32 also gives you as much depth-of-field as possible. Optical quality is excellent and the solid build-quality inspires confidence.

I find this a great macro lens. It's light weight and quick to focus. I find the image very sharp and the f2.8 lens is nice and bright.

CANON 100mm Macro

I echo all of the other comments - great lens, quite big and heavy, but the macro and portrait results are excellent. Manual focus is essential as I've found it can hunt a little - and despite the aperture and USM this was definitely not built for fast continous focus work. It is a specialist lens.

Fabulous lens

Super sharp, even wide open. A very versatile lens, not just for macro work. Fast, internal autofocus. For close-up work, I find it easy to focus manually. I often use mine with extension tubes and results are great.

great prime

this was my first prime lens (yes i got it before the nifty fifty!) It awesome - it's so sharp & offers great macro capabilities. Fast & quiet auto focusing and easy to use manual focus. f2.8 is a great wide open aperture, and makes it fast enough for indoor portrait work (although a little long on a crop sensor). I got mine for about £260 which was a bargain! I have used it loads over the past 2 years, and still use it despite now having L lenses in the similar focal range.

Excellent quality and focuses rapidly on the subject, a great lens for both in-close work and for general portraits. Produces superb results when the Macro Twin Flash MT-24 is attached.

An excellent lens

I've had this lens for a over year now, the quality is excellent - even when used as a 100mm lens for normal non macro shots, it is very clear and sharp, with plenty of contrast. It has the usual high quality of a Canon lens and excellent quick focussing. Well worth a look!

Very Happy with the lens
Have only had the lens for a couple of weeks, but when using it to photograph fast moving dung beetles in Crystal Springs, South Africa was extremely impressed by the speed of focusing and the sharpness of the image using a EOS 20D

I use this lens exclusively for portraiture, it gives a razor sharp image belittling it's 'consumer price' and allows tight cropping at a short distance, something the 85mm and 70-200mm L series lens can't do.
