In terms of style, build quality and features, lenses don’t come much better than the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR. It offers a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 along with built-in VR (Vibration Reduction) technology that allows you to hand-hold with slower shutter speeds.

Remarkably, the overall size of the lens is kept to a minimum and looks fairly small compared to the older Nikon 80-200mm or the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens it competes against.

You can expect extremely sharp shots using this lens while chromatic aberration is rarely noticeable. The maximum aperture of f/2.8 makes sure that you can get pleasing out-of-focus areas when shooting wide open.

The price is probably the only thing that you could class as not great about this lens. Although the price has come down a fair amount, it’s still hard for most photographers to justify spending over a grand on a single lens. If you are a jobbing pro, then there’s nothing really like it available so it becomes a must-have lens.

I also own the 18-200 which I use more often. Whenever I can I prefer to get the 70-200 out because it is RAZOR sharp and produces images with the most sublime colours. The AF is incredibly quick on my D200 and rarely hunts. Be aware though, it is long and it is heavy. I pulled it out at my daughter's sportsday and it raised a few eyebrows. This is not a subtle lens - you have been warned. It costs a bomb but the quality beats the 18-200 hands down. That said the versatility of the 18-200 means it sits on my camera 80% of the time. If you can rob a bank, get one, you won't regret it.

RE: Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR

I an fairly new to photography and my current kit comprises of a Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm VR lens. Can someone please tell me if the 70-200mm lens zoomed in to 200mm would give a sharper image than the 18-200mm zoomed in to 200mm. The reason for me concidering this lens is for wild life photography. Ian

The best lens I have

I been photographing for more than 30 years, and decided to invest in this piece of equipment last fall. It's the best lens I have had. Combined with a 1.7 converter I got a 510mm, 4.8 on my D200, enabling me to shoot high quality images under very difficult light conditions.
