The upgraded Olympus E-510 comes hot on the heels of the recently upgraded E-410 as we await the launch of the new Olympus pro-spec D-SLR. In the meantime, with built-in stabiliser, a self-cleaning system and a whole host of other gadgets, the E-510 covers all the needs of the enthusiast photographer.

The resolution of the Olympus E-510 has been upped to 10MP, which is the standard for recent D-SLRs. There’s a Live View feature too, with the addition of a sensor-shift image stabilisation system and, of course, the standard Olympus Supersonic Wave Filter, which reduces the amount of dust sticking to your sensor.

Like most Olympus D-SLRs, it has a dual card slot for both CF and xD cards, so those upgrading from Olympus compacts can continue to use their xD cards or invest in CF cards instead. It certainly looks as though Olympus has made a special effort to make sure that all the buyer’s feature requirements are fulfilled in the E-510.

The E-510 shares none of the square, chunky design of the E-500 but is considerably more sleek and stylish. In fact, it bears a striking resemblance to the E-410 but with an added grip and slightly larger dimensions.

There’s now a more defined ridge on the main grip that gives you a solid hold on the camera and is extremely comfortable for prolonged usage. The E-510’s handling is a massive improvement over the E-500, although this wasn’t bad to begin with, and is definitely the more comfortable option over the more compact E-410.

The E-510’s new image-processing engine is fairly impressive and does an awesome job of writing the images to the memory card. It clocks in at 1.5 seconds for a RAW file and 2 seconds for SHQ (Super High Quality) JPEG.

The continuous shooting buffer is equally as good with the camera keeping up 3fps (frames-per-second) to fill an entire 1GB CF card without a delay and no agonising wait afterwards either, as the data is written to the card as it goes along.

As on all current Olympus D-SLRs, there are only three autofocus points, which is a considerable disappointment. This lack of autofocus points is the sole reason the camera didn’t score higher for performance, and this affects the camera’s overall score.

It lives up to the selling point of Olympus Cameras - quality and light. You can carry it for miles and not realise you have a camera two lens - did look at other makes but were put off by their weight especially as I often walk for miles over cliff paths etc., so having a car to carry the gear is no good.

I traded in my E400 for the E510 which has a lot more going for it i.e. image stabiliser, live view and better handling, strap lugs no longer getting in the way.On the downside it still has only three focus points but hopefully it will be a case of " What you aint had you wont miss ".It handles well is not too heavy (unless my 70-300mm lens is on board)seems well balanced in the hand and takes good crisp pictures

I bought the E510 to get me back into photography - I'd studied it years ago as part of a graphics course. One of the major considerations for buying this camera was the weight - it's half that of some others. In addition to this it can also produce some cracking photos. My only complaint is that the focus can be a little hit and miss (hunting around), and I find it quite hard going to manually focus, but that will be my eyes I guess...

I upgraded to the E-510 from a Canon 5D for weight reasons (shoulder problems) and with the superb Zuiko lenses I find myself pleasantly delighted. It is easier than the Canon to get good results straight from the camera, and the lack of pixels is made up for by the sheer image quality. It is only let down bu the small viewfinder, which the optional EP-6 eye cup only partly makes up for. Ergonomically it is easier to use and change settings than the Canon. With a few (Sigma) exceptions you are stuck with Olympus' own lenses, but there's certainly nothing wrong with that!

My first DSLR and what a great tool for all round photography. Things have moved on a long way since my Practika MTL5.
