Users of any of the last few D-SLR releases from Canon can expect the same level of performance that they have become accustomed to so it’s unlikely that anyone will be disappointed here.

The arrival of many of the new features in the 450D shouldn’t come as much of a shock. As we’ve seen time and time again, Canon launches new features in its flagship models and these then trickle down into the budget options. The 450D is no exception. It features Live View and sensor cleaning as first seen on the EOS-1D Mark III and a massive 3in screen that dominates the rear of the camera. The 450D also benefits from the new 18-55mm IS kit lens so it can now compete against the less expensive, rival D-SLRs which mostly feature in-camera image stabilisation. This does make the autofocus a little more whiney than the non-IS lens but at least you have anti-shake as standard now.

We’re all eager to see whether the EOS 450D is simply a 400D with a few new features or it’s a whole other camera in its own right. The jury is still out on that one and only a full main test will tell.

I started out with a Kodak Brownie then Minolta XG many many moons ago and worked with Fuji 7000 , 9500 compacts until one day I needed to get a little better quality. I am very pleased with the results that this camera has given me so far and with the out-of-the-box auto mode have taken many decent shots already. This camera does tick all the relavent boxes when it comes to Price ; resolution, weight, and ease of use, but to get the best of the unit you need to read the manual thoroughly and study the features on offer. (A good understanding of Photography does help too....) Overall I would recommend this to anyone as a good platform to get into a semi -proffessional mode but I know that it want be long before I will want to upgrade to the pro-spec cameras that at the moment are out of my budget. Well done Canon! a Happy User

I happen to like the 3inch screen, dont think its too big at all, 4inchs would be too big, but i think the 3inch is fine. that aside, i have to agree with the advice against upgrading if you have a 400d. if you have a 300d or 350d then it probably is as you get the better processer, digic III, and some other useful functions, otherwise 'man up' and upgrade to the 40D! :)

Canon EOS 450D

I was very interested in Bob Martin's review of the EOS 450D as I have been debating whether to upgrade my EOS 400D. On watching the video he has made my mind up and I will, for now, be keeping my 400D. I agree with him as far as the pricing is concerned as at the moment by budget will not go to the 40D. I am completely satisfied with the camera I have and I think it would be an unnecessary expense. I only do photography as a hobby but love every minute of it and I do like to keep up with the trend if I can. There has been a lot of speculation about this 450D and I don't think it warrants the expenditure for an amateur like me. Thank you Bob for a superb review.
