The Western Digital MyBook Essential Edition is a solid external hard drive, with 500GB’s worth of storage space.

The Western Digital My Book Essential Edition has a subtle book design. Though it has a plastic casing, it still feels well made and the black finish means it looks quite slick sitting on your desk and, depending how much space you have available, can be stacked how you want.

It will automatically power on when you boot up your computer and switch itself off as well. There is also Google software installed to help you search your drive quickly. Though this function is PC-only, the FAT 32 format allows use on both PC and Mac platforms.

Though it isn’t that quick at copy speeds, it’s still not too bad at 43secs to transfer 1GB of information for computer to drive, while it’s performance picks up at transfer speeds, taking only 9secs to load a 200MB file directly into Photoshop CS2

Really quite an irritating aspect of this drive is the software it has.... Also there seems to be a correlation in that lightroom crashes when working with this drive, I guess some kind of sleep mode? Build other aspects of your review I agree with, and perhaps mine is just an oddball. I am disabling the inbuilt software and hope for a more stable result.

I have the next model up that supports firewire 800 for even faster transfer speed. Looks ok, but the blue light on the front can be a bit annoying. The software doesnt work well with Mac osX, but i dont need it aynway as i use it on my imac with time machine. Runs slightly noisey than my Lacie drive i use at work, and it doesnt always mount properly which is annoying.
