The new AW Series from Sony is an impressive black beast on first glance and it boasts an 18.4 inch LCD screen in 16:9 format. The design and build quality of the AW is first class and Sony has taken great care in placing the most important buttons and features in the paramount areas. The on/off button is neatly placed on one end of the laptop and on the opposite side you’ll find charging port – saving you time that you might have spent fussing around at the back of your laptop. Sony have recognised how important fast upload speeds are for photographers and you’ll find plenty of USB ports (3) and memory card slots (CF, SD, MS Pro) dotted around the outside of the laptop.

It features a powerful 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and an impressive 4Gb of RAM that’s going to be all important when it comes to running those hungry programmes like Photoshop, Lightroom and Bridge. There’s a 128 GB solid state disk (SSD) and combine this with the flash memory that works together in a RAID array with the 500GB SATA drive and you’ll have masses of hard drive space for the meantime. Using the laptop showed off it’s rapid performance and the AW’s speed is highly impressive when your working on highest resolution images in Photoshop or Elements.

On test the screen was crisp and clear from even the acutest angles and it’s 18.4in size gave us plenty of space when we were post processing in Elements.  The battery life on the laptop was impressive and there are three power plans to choose from, Balanced, Power Saver and High Performance so you can economically use the power that you have remaining.

The operating system, Windows Vista was extremely easy to navigate through and as well as coming with Adobe Elements 6 and Lightroom 2 as part of the package it offers a variety of applications including VAIO movie story and VAIO music box. If you’re into movies the AW comes fully fitted with a Blue Ray disk drive so you can enjoy the full benefits of cinematic visuals. Combine this with the clear sound from the Dolby speakers and you’ve got an ideal portable DVD player on the move.

The AW series is an expensive piece of kit, but it’s worth remembering that the build quality and performance is first class. There are subtle references on this AW series to the latest D-SLR Alpha models, with the same rubberised grip materials used in certain areas and if you’re in need of a desktop replacement or an extremely powerful portable laptop on the move this well featured and mighty powerful AW series makes a top choice.
