The eyecatching design with its glossly black frame certainly looks the part, and the touch-sensitive controls give the unit a high-tech appeal, which feels more expensive than the price suggests. The build of the adjustable stand wasn’t quite as impressive though, with height and tilt adjustments feeling a bit stiff compared to the pivot and swivel.
The SM2493HM features VGA, DVI and HDMI ports, and built-in multi-media speakers, although there’s no USB hub. Without any calibration we found the colour accuracy to be a little off, during Digital Photo’s October 2008 test, displaying a green cast, and in general the colours weren’t as bright as other models tested. The gradation of colour performed better during the display performance tests however, with little evidence of vertical banding, and although shadow detail was on the dark side, visible detail was maintained in all tonal areas.
