The Samsung Sync MastER C23A550U has an ultra thin design and features a heavy base, making it a solid unit. With a TN panel and LED backlight technology, its dual hinge design means it’s compact when folded, but doesn’t have the manoeuvrability of some of its closest rivals. Screen height can be increased, with the option of tilting up and down, but neither movement was as smooth as we would have liked. The 1920x1080 resolution is full HD and on either side of the base there are two USB 2 ports, and two USB 3 ports. HDMI, D-Sub and USB connectivity is supported, however there’s no DVI or DVI-D connection port so we had to use a DVI-to-D-Sub adapter to connect to our G5 Mac. After adjusting display resolution manually to 1920x 1080 the screen displayed a clear image; colour was well represented and we viewed all the scales across our colour spectrum. There’s the option to adjust brightness, contrast, RGB and colour tone from the touch-sensitive base, too. Our mono and colour gradient test files showed signs of thin banding, most noticeably in dark green and grey areas, while the White and Black point revealed a better performance, with a super rendition of blacks and strong level of highlight detail.
