Raw Therapee V2.4.1 is donationware (which means you can download it free and leave a donation) for Windows or Linux platforms, but not Apple Mac. The latest release of Raw Therapee is version 3, and while this boasts some user interface enhancements, the algorithms are still being developed so we decided to test the current stable release, Raw Therapee V2.4.1, even though RAW files from newer cameras like the Canon EOS 7D aren’t supported.
The interface is nicely laid out, providing everything you need for editing and converting RAW files. The folder browser and thumbnail filmstrip lets you star rate and filter images, and there’s a large preview area. Adjustments are grouped in four tabs, which are easy to navigate, and there’s a snapshots palette for adding Save points to revert back to as you go through a conversion. It’s a well-featured package with controls including advanced exposure correction, sharpening, Noise reduction, colour correction and lens correction. Performance is a little slow, however, with previews taking a few seconds to refresh when working on large RAW files.
