Easy to use and doesn’t quite cut the mustard, but PICTURENAUT V2.1 is free!

Picturenaut v2.1 is a freeware program developed by German photographers interested in HDR. It’s easy to use – you just load up your images, set the exposure value for each shot, tick if you need exposures aligned or colour balanced and hit OK. The files are merged quickly, providing a 32-bit HDR image in just a few seconds.
This solution unfortunately doesn’t have RAW file support, so you’ll need to convert shots to TIFF or JPEG before loading them up. Once an HDR image is generated there are two Tone Mapping solutions, Adaptive Logarithmic and Photoreceptor Physiology. Each has four adjustment sliders, a histogram with black and white points and a Gamma adjustment. Both Tone Mapping solutions are global operators however, and that means the adjustments are applied consistently to all tones in the file instead of locally to small areas of brightness, making it difficult to create the hyper-real finish associated with HDR images.
