NEC’s MultiSync EA232WMi features an IPS (In Plane Switching) panel. Designed to offer excellent viewing angles and strong colour rendition with its LED backlight and ambient light sensor, it boasts a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and offers four USB ports, with two on the side for easy access. Connectivity is via DVI-D, but if your computer is slightly older, a VGA port and cable is also supplied. The monitor has a predominantly plastic finish, with a thin 19mm bezel and a heavy, circular base thath contributes to a solid feel.
Offering excellent levels of manoeuvrability, you can tilt the screen up and down, there’s the option of increasing height, it can be swivelled by 360 degrees and even rotated into portrait orientation. Out of the box, the stand was fixed to the screen, making it quick to set up, and there’s a neat layout of menu buttons, which let you take control of brightness, contrast and RGB settings. There was little to fault when it came to assessing sharpness levels on this monitor and it handled our gradient test files well with no signs of banding. However, we were rather unimpressed by the White and Black point and noticed a real lack of detail in the brightest highlights, and also struggled to pick out the distinction of steps in the blue and red tones at the darker end of our colour test scale.
