The Iomega eGo 500GB is designed for anyone looking for an affordable storage device which is both portable and suitable for PC and Mac users. The Iomega eGo 500GB is designed with a drop-guard feature, which protects it when dropped from a height of up to 1.3m. If you do happen to drop it, you should be able to pick it up, plug it in and continue using it. Iomega’s Protection Suite is also included and features McAfee Virus Scan, Iomega QuikProtect and MozyHome online back-up. Other colours available include blue, red, silver and black. The fact ours worked after being dropped from 1m, with no side effects, suggests it’s built to survive a long time!
Beside the recessed USB port, there’s a bright LED that indicates when the drive is working and it feels durable and solid.
The Iomega eGo 500GB is formatted in the NTFS format, so if you’re a Mac user you’ll have to re-format it first, a process that’s clearly explained in eGo’s start guide. Hooked up with its USB2.0 interface, we copied 1GB of data on the drive in 43 seconds. Loading a 200MB image from the drive into Photoshop took a hasty 14 seconds.
The Iomega eGo is a convenient portable storage device that’ll put up with the rough and tumble of everyday use. For £69, the 500GB eGo represents excellent value for money, but if you have a lower budget, check out the 320GB version for £51.
