HP’s X23LED features a TN (Twisted Nematic) panel with white LED backlight design, but its finish, understandably for the price, doesn’t feel quite as refined as some others on the market. Out of the box the gloss-finish display was relatively easy to set up once the plastic stand was screwed into the base of the screen, but it didn’t feel as solid or as stable on the desk as a monitor should do, and a lack of height adjustment meant we had to prop it up to position it to the desired working height, which wasn’t ideal. Tilting the screen back and forth to find the best viewing angle also revealed some noticeable signs of wobbling. Connection wise, the X23LED has DVI-D and VGA connectivity, however there aren’t any USB or memory card sockets at the side or underneath. There is, however, control over brightness, contrast and RGB Channels from the menu button at the front of the screen and this was navigated without any problems. With a full HD 1920x1080 resolution, the clarity of the screen at first glance was good, however over time we found the colour accuracy slightly cool and observed obvious signs of banding in the darkest tones of our gradient test chart. The White point levels of contrast were better handled and though we didn’t experience any nasty signs of a vertical colour shift, it became difficult to view the gradations of colour in the darkest blue tones.
