The Apple 23-inch is an exceptionally classy looking monitor on first look but does the £540 price tag make it money well spent?

The Apple 23-in Cinema HD is a classy-looking monitor with a high-end build quality and a stylish brushed aluminium finish. The sturdy stand offers a solid platform, and though adjustments are limited to a forward/backward tilt, the actions have a smooth feel. Installing on our Mac was easy via the DVI connector, but the display is also compatible with PCs (though you’ll need a DVI socket as there’s no VGA connector).
In terms of features, the screen includes USB ports and Firewire 400, and although external controls are limited to Brightness, with an excellent display performance you don’t really need anything else.
The screen was clear and bright, visible from all viewing angles, and displayed strong colours that were bold but not over-saturated, nor too high in contrast. Colour balance was spot-on too, and generally the Apple 23in HD performed excellently in Digital Photo’s October 2008 test.
