The Sony Cybershot HX5 falls within Sony’s high performance compact range, but unfortunately doesn’t offer RAW shooting.
The 10.2Mp Exmor R CMOS 1/2.4 type sensor on the Sony CyberShot HX5 measures approximately 5.76x4.29mm. Where the HX5 flourishes is at the front with its 10x optical zoom. Offering an impressive 25-250mm range, it can’t quite match the fast apertures of its rivals with a f/3.5- 5.5 variable aperture, but would be good for those who like wider flexibility. Featuring a BIONZ processor, the HX5 offers a continuous burst of 10fps at full resolution but we found it took a lengthy 17secs to write this data to an Extreme Pro SDHC card. Image stabilisation is in the form of Sony’s Optical SteadyShot and ISO runs from 125-3200. The pop-up flash is built into the front of the body and though Manual and Program modes are accessed from the mode dial, Aperture and Shutter Priority modes are not featured. The 3in, 230K-dot screen takes up most of the room at the rear and there’s a simple layout of buttons, including a movie-rec button for full HD (1920x1080) videos. Although the menu system offers clear explanations of settings, it wasn’t the fastest to navigate and the playback button was rather too small and too close to the D-Pad.
