The Samsung NV100HD digital compact camera features a 14.7Mp sensor with a 3.6x optical zoom, equivalent to 28-102mm in 35mm format. This useful focal length will be ideal for general shooting and wide-angled shots, meaning you’ll fit the whole family or landscape easily in frame. On the back is a 3in LCD screen and on the right hand edge you’ll find the play, menu and zoom buttons in a vertical arrangement. Two of the most commonly used buttons – on/off and shutter release – are located on the NV’s top plate, as is the mode dial located within easy thumb’s reach.
The camera features a touch screen interface (doubtless popular with nimble-fingered users) for altering the camera’s settings: face detection, centre AF, multi AF and touch AF. Combine these AF options with the camera’s Dual OIS optical image stabilisation feature and you’ll be able to get sharp results with every shot.
If you’re one for shooting in low light conditions, the camera comes with an ISO range of 80-3200 so you can crank it up as the light goes down. We found the ISO performance produced acceptable results up to ISO 400; you’d only want to use ISO 800 and faster in emergencies. Using the camera at low ISO produced sharp results, time after time and we were quite taken back by the sound quality in movie mode – it’s truly exceptional.
For some the touch screen may be a little complex and pushing the flash down to fit it in your pocket can be slightly frustrating after a while but if you’re in the market for a stylish-looking compact with bags of quality, available in four colours (Titanium Silver, Black, Silver/Red and Silver/Black) then take a look at the NV100HD. But be sure to give it the touch-screen a good going over first – to see how you get on with it.
