The Pentax Optio W60 seems like the ideal expedition compact – it can operate up to 4m (13ft) underwater for two hours and at extreme temperatures well below freezing. Ideal for snorkelling round reefs and duck-diving perhaps – but less useful for deep-water Scuba activities.

Available in Ocean Blue or Silver, the Optio W60 features movie mode, face recognition, smile capture and blink detection. Face recognition does just what it says and performs exposure compensation too, while the smile capture function allows the camera to take portraits automatically as soon as the subject grins. Blink detection alerts users that ‘closed eyes have been detected’.
The camera’s shake reduction system automatically sets the ISO up to a high 6400 to prevent subject blur – a little disappointing if you’re looking for genuine vibration reduction as results at ISO 6400 do look grainy. Close focusing is excellent, however – Super Macro mode brings out the details in even the smallest subjects, as close as 1cm.
The 24 shooting modes are easy to access but many are of dubious photographic value. Among the playback options are the ability to crop and resize images, cut a still from movie recordings, add colour filters and frames.
It's certainly a useful holiday compact – whether skiing, mucking around in the pool or snorkelling. In short – a smart, versatile camera that’s easy to navigate and delivers good results.
