The Pentax Optio S1 is slim enough to slip into your pocket with ease and features pleasingly smooth, rounded corners to its retro-styled plastic body.

The Pentax Optio S1 is available in four different colours – pastel blue, red, black or silver. With a functional button arrangement at the rear your thumb is never far from where it needs to be, and this helps when navigating the menu system. The Optio S1 holds its own in terms of focusing and write-to-card speeds, and you’re offered a versatile 5x optical zoom lens that provides a 28-140mm equivalent.
Inside you get a 14.1Mp sensor complete with sensor-shift image stabilisation to reduce camera shake when using slower shutter speeds, and there’s also a range of shooting modes including Auto, Program and 21 Scene modes.
You also get 720p HD video capabilities and images are recorded to SD, SDHC or SDXC memory cards.
Unfortunately, the images we got from the Optio S1 were a little disappointing. They were sharp but really struggled when the ISO was pushed past 800. At this point, the results started to become very Noisy. Alongside this, the auto White Balance left quite a strong unwanted blue-green colour cast, and these combined factors led to an average image quality rating.
