You could be forgiven for thinking that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 is anything but a compact, such is its size and styling, but it is, complete with 100-1600 (3200 also available) ISO range, and a 2in monitor

Compact it most certainly isn’t, but it falls into this category because it doesn’t use a through the lens viewing system like an SLR. It’s probably more suited to users who might consider a small compact too gimmicky, but don’t want to make the jump to a full-blown SLR. If you fit into this category you’ll probably be very happy with the FZ50.
The 12x zoom range gives you a vast array of shooting options and, being a Leica lens, quality is high. This is improved further by the 10 million pixel resolution that gives excellent image detail. Pictures can be captured either as JPEGs or RAW files.
As is common with compacts there’s an Image Stabilising (IS) function to reduce camera shake, plus a whole range of shooting modes including subject based programs and the full complement of SLR modes, including manual.
SLR functionality meets compact simplicity. A fine performer, but won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

I had the older version of this camera then upgraded to this camera.
It is extremely good to grasp photography.
It offers the options to have everything automatic, which everyone does when first purchasing and has great results. But then you can choose all the different options and modes such as shutter priority.
It is a camera you can learn and will definetly be a bridge camera. You will be hooked on photography, then purchasse an SLR like i have done.
