The Olympus mju 1030 SW is a tough little compact – despite its stylish looks

The Olympus mju 1030 SW is an attractive piece of kit that doesn’t give away any of its heavy-duty attributes. Not until it’s in your hand does its solidity and weight suggest the durability in store.
This is a straightforward and easy camera to use. The main settings are fast to change and you don’t need to jump into the menu too often, while the Scene modes are clearly labelled.
Digital Photo tested the Olympus mju 1030 SW’s durability in the October 2008 issue by dropping it on to the floor and bouncing it off the bricks. After picking it up and switching it on, it burst into life and, despite the scuff marks on what were  its smooth metal corners, it was fine.
The Olympus mju 1030 SW produced well-exposed shots, although at low ISOs, some were ever  so slightly soft. As the ISO increased, it handled digital noise well and maintained detail admirably. The Auto White Balance handled most scenes very well, too.
The Olympus mju 1030 SW ended up with a Digital Photo Gold Award.  It’s classy looking,  streamlined as any other compact camera, easy to use, yet at the same time is extremely tough, standing up to everything thrown at it. If you want a go-anywhere compact that’ll survive a lot of serious mistreatment, then the Olympus mju 1030 SW should be top of your list.
