The Olympus XZ-1 is a beefy compact and its large body may suit those who like a larger grip.
Featuring a 10Mp CCD sensor of the 1/1.63in type, the Olympus XZ-1’s sensor dimensions (8.08x6.01mm) work out fractionally larger than those found in other similar compacts. Featuring a 4x optical zoom, the Olympus XZ-1 covers a 28-112mm film focal length with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 at its widest point, closing to f/2.5 at full telephoto. Shooting in the native 4:3 aspect ratio, there’s the option of shooting in 16:9, 3:2 or a square format and it offers RAW and JPEG support. ISO spans from 100- 6400 with no drop in resolution at the high-end and though continuous shooting is available at 7fps in HQ JPEG mode, this reduces to 2fps when shooting in RAW. Image stabilisation is the sensor-shift type, effective to two stops. There’s a dedicated movie-rec button at the rear, alongside the 3in, 610K-dot screen, but this lacks clarity compared to some others on test. The scroll dial around the D-Pad is small and fiddly to use but the mode dial on the top-plate is well placed for thumb control and the manual lens ring at the front clicks reassuringly. AF speed is quick for a compact and AF tracking worked well into the far corners of the frame. Available in black as well as storm-trooper white.
