The Olympus TG-610 has a chunky metal and plastic design and is nicely weighted at 190g. The large buttons on the back made for easy navigation of the menu systems and though the stick design of the D-pad was a bit too sensitive and took some getting used to, it was generally a pleasure to handle. It’s waterproof down to 5m, so not up there with the deepest divers, but will survive frozen conditions down to -100C and can sustain a fall of up to 1.5m.
The 3in LCD screen was crisp and clear even under water and the TG-610’s image quality was good, displaying great Noise handling throughout and a nice rendering of detail from the 14Mp sensor. Its 28-140mm equivalent 5x optical zoom is versatile and when you combine these plus points with the price, it’s great value. The use of digital image stabilisation rather than a lens or sensor-shift system does let it down slightly but this can be overlooked when you take into account its build, image quality and inexpensive price.
