The Olympus TOUGH-8000 has an impressive array of rugged features and looks built to last!Olympus was one of the first manufacturers to embrace the idea of an extreme compact, so it’s no surprise to find that the fittingly named Olympus TOUGH-8000 has a decent array of rugged features. It’s waterproof down to 10m but has a much more subtle, compact design. If you happen to drop it, it should withstand a fall of up to 2m, while it’s also crush-proof, taking a maximum load of 100kg. As you’d expect, the Olympus TOUGH-8000 hast an ultra-solid feel, tipping the scales at 182g, but if there’s one minor gripe it’s the high-gloss metal finish on parts of it. While it looks nice, it’s liable to scratch easily, with the front section recording any greasy fingerprints with ease.
The Olympus TOUGH-8000 sports a 12Mp resolution and handy wide-angle zoom, ranging from 28-102mm. There’s dual anti-shake system in the shape of a sensor-shift mechanism, and ISO boost (if the ISO is too low, it will automatically increase it in iAuto), while the standard ISO range is from 64-1600. Among the 19 scene modes are 4 specific underwater modes and there’s even a specific Beauty mode that smoothes skin.
Using the Olympus TOUGH-8000 is fairly hassle-free – there’s a command dial for the main setting, while toggling through shooting settings is quick using the camera’s 4-way control pad. The 2.7in screen is bright and clear, but be careful not to find a finger covering the lens.
