The Olympus E-30’s DNA is closely linked to the flagship E-3, but features some subtle updates including a 12.3Mp sensor and larger 2.7in screen. The larger 2.7in screen on the Olympus E-30 can tilt and swivel for awkward angles during Live View shooting. There’s an 11-point AF system, with all AF points being cross-type, though the ISO range runs from a conservative 100-3200. There’s a built-in Image Stabilization system, offering a class-topping 5-stop advantage, and as the E-30 is a part of the open FourThirds system, the camera has a 2x focal length conversion. A side effect of this is the viewfinder feels a little more cramped and tunnel-like than those on other systems. Though it doesn’t have a magnesium alloy chassis, the E-30’s glass-fibre reinforced plastic construction produces a solid feel, with a good chunky handgrip to match.
The AF was commendable, though a little sluggish in low-contrast conditions, but the Live View, employing contrast AF to focus, did a decent job of things across the board. Hitting the OK button brings up a host of core settings on the screen that can be adjusted quickly, but the rest of the menu system lacks the clear navigation of some of its competitors.
