When the Olympus SP-810 UZ was announced in July 2011, it turned heads with the claim of having the world’s longest optical zoom on a compact camera (36x,
24-864mm). It’s small, too, but this tiny stature means that buttons and dials have been kept to a minimum and there’s no external mode dial. Shooting modes are instead adjusted via the on-screen menu, and it doesn’t feature any manual or semi-auto shooting modes. There’s no EVF either, nor hotshoe port for the purpose of attaching an external ‘finder, so composition is left solely to the large 3in rear LCD screen – which is notably low-res at just 230k-dots. The screen is also fixed into the body. The SP-810 UZ punches in at a very reasonable £199, making it a very affordable compact option.
